Olsen is an American painter, illustrator, and accomplished tattoo artist widely recognized for his distinct contributions to the Lowbrow and Pop Surrealism art movements. His highly detailed, symbolic style is frequently described as “cartoon realism,” combining classical painting techniques with comical or macabre imagery. This is a one-of-a-kind mixed media painting on paper by contemporary Dutch artist Jaco Kranendonk. Titled “Switzerland,” the medium-sized piece measures 19.5 inches in height and 25.5 inches in width. It features a cityscape subject and falls under the style of Outsider Expressionism. Produced in 1999, the painting is signed by the artist and is unframed. It is a handmade original and is sold as a single piece. Jaco Kranendonk was born in 1951 and raised in Rotterdam, and has always been fascinated with ships and transportation. Ill as a child, he suffered undiagnosed mental illness and could not hold a job. After becoming medicated in the early ’70’s, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital for three years. In 1991, Kranendonk was one of the first artists to attend the Atelier Herenplaats, where once drawing and painting, his illness subsided and he has been obsessively painting ever since. His paintings are populated with a continual stream of cars, buses, trams and metros which worm their way under and above the city’s buildings. The metropolis of Rotterdam offers a gigantic wealth of images which Jaco has stored in his memory. The city in the past and the present merge with each other. The dynamics in his work are vast. Kranendonk has been exhibited extensively since 1998. His work can be found in these collections: Museum de Stadshof, Zwolle (till 2001), Museé d’Art Différencié, Liège, Belgium, Neuve Invention Collection de L’Art Brut, Lausanne, Switzerland, Charlotte Zander, Bönnigheim, Germany and Max E. Ammann Collection, Switzerland.
