PRAJNAPARAMITA-PERFECT WISDOM ORIGINAL TIBETAN THANGKA PAINTING WITH SILK BORDER
GANESH GANPATI VINAYAKA ORIGINAL ACRYLIC PAINTING IN HANDMADE NEPALI LOKTA PAPER This is an original hand-painted Tibetan Thangka Painting of Prajnaparamita, an important concept in Mahayana Buddhism. It is bordered with high-quality silk and depicts wisdom that leads to realizing emptiness (shunyata) and the true nature of reality. The teachings of Prajnaparamita emphasize the transcendence of dualistic thinking and the ultimate emptiness of all phenomena. These teachings help practitioners move beyond conventional concepts and perceptions and attain direct insight into the nature of existence. The Prajnaparamita scriptures are a collection of sutras, or discourses, that expound on reality’s nature and the path to enlightenment. The most well-known are the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and the Perfection of Wisdom sutras. These texts stress the concept of emptiness and teach that all phenomena lack inherent existence or substantiality. They also teach that our ordinary perceptions and conceptualizations are based on mistaken notions of separateness. One can attain liberation from suffering by realizing the emptiness of all things. Prajnaparamita is considered a fundamental aspect of the Mahayana Buddhist path, alongside compassion (bodhisattva ideal). The wisdom of Prajnaparamita is seen as an essential complement to compassion, as the two qualities are said to be inseparable on the path to enlightenment. Prajnaparamita’s teachings have profoundly impacted Mahayana Buddhism, including Tibetan Buddhism and Zen. Practitioners continue to study, contemplate, and meditate on these teachings to deepen their understanding of reality and cultivate wisdom. ORIGINAL HAND-PAINTED VAJRASATTVA TIBETAN THANGKA PAINTING WITH SILK BROCADE
This is a unique, hand-painted Tibetan thangka depicting Bodhisattva Vajrasattva, elegantly mounted with silk. Vajrasattva is an essential figure in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism, often called the Diamond Being or Thunderbolt Being. He is mentioned in the Mahavairocana Sutra and the Vajrasekhara Sutra. In the Mahavairocana Sutra, Vajrasattva guides those eager to learn from Vairocana Buddha, initiating a philosophical dialogue where the Buddha uses a mandala to enhance understanding. Vajrasattva also challenges the need for rituals and physical objects to grasp more profound truths, to which Vairocana responds by explaining that these elements serve as practical tools for enlightenment. In Newar Buddhism, Vajrasattva is held in high esteem and symbolizes the ideal guru, often invoked in rituals. In Shingon Buddhism, he is revered as the second patriarch. Kukai’s writings suggest that Vajrasattva transmitted esoteric wisdom from Vairocana Buddha to Nagarjuna. In Tibetan Buddhism, the root tantra associated with Vajrasattva is Dorje Gyan or Vajra Ornament. Practices centered around Vajrasattva are vital for eliminating obscurations, advancing in Vajrayana practices, and rectifying broken vows after initiation. Engaging in Vajrasattva practices is believed to cleanse karma, promote peace, and foster enlightened actions. Size of the painting: 11 inch x 14 inch (28 cm x 36 cm) Size with the Brocade: 26-inches x 36 inches ( 66 cm x 91 cm) Material: Handmade Cotton Canvas Color: water/gold What is Thangka? • A thangka, also known as tangka, thanka or tanka is a painting on cotton, or silk appliqué, usually depicting a Buddhist deity, scene, or mandala. • The thangka is not a flat creation like an oil painting or acrylic painting but consists of a complex subject. • Generally, thangkas last a very long time and retain much of their luster, but because of their delicate nature, they have to be kept in dry places where moisture won’t affect the quality of the painting. • The Thangkas serve as important teaching tools depicting the life of the Buddha, various influential lamas and other deities and bodhisattvas. • The Thangka, when created properly, perform several different functions. Images of deities can be used as teaching tools when depicting the life (or lives) of the Buddha, describing historical events concerning important Lamas, or retelling myths associated with other deities. • The Devotional images act as the centerpiece during a ritual or ceremony and are often used as mediums through which one can offer prayers or make requests.
