Search the Inventories by copying the following text into you web browser: https://americanart.si.edu/research/inventories 2. It was sold at Sotheby’s Parke Barnet in NYC, Sale No. 1205, on June 23, 1987, Lot #86. Please see the black and white photo from the catalog. 3. The provenance was listed as Mrs. P. Kalt. A search of the NYTimes archives revealed that she was the wife of Mr. Pryor Kalt, the heir to the largest NYC lumber company. 4. The gallery label on the back places the painting at the Congress Hotel (and Annex) at 536 S. Michigan Avenue in Chicago sometime after 1909. (Chicago renumbered it’s streets in 1909 when Michigan Avenue was split into North and South.) 5. This address belonged to the Henry Reinhardt’s (and Son) Gallery, a major dealer in American Art. This address appeared in January 1, 1909 American Art Directory in the gallery’s ad which also showed locations in New York City, Paris, France and Chicago. Access the 1909 American Art Directory by copying the following text into your web browser: https://play.google.com/store/books/details?id=wVRPE0wcdxEC&rdid=book-wVRPE0wcdxEC&rdot=1 6. The 536 S. Michigan was 232 Michigan Avenue before 1909. The scheme of mapping of street addresses can be found in: http://www.chsmedia.org/househistory/1911snc/start.pdf 7. The 232 Michigan Avenue Chicago is shown on an exhibition catalogue of the Henry Reinhardt’s Galleries for the Exhibition of 18 George Inness Paintings held in March 1911. That catalogue can be accessed athttp://www.idaillinois.org/cdm/ref/collection/artic/id/124 8. The painting that is offered for sale shows all the 4 brushstroke types and various specific colors (e.g., lemon chrome) that are identified in the book by Prof. Dr. Adrienne Baxter Bell, Professor of Art at Marymount Manhattan College. Her book “George Inness and the Visionary Landscape” is a definitive scholarly book on Inness by an academic that is used to rigorous peer review. https://www.amazon.com/George-Inness-Visionary-Landscape-Adrienne/dp/0807600091/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1480534255&sr=1-1&refinements=p_27%3AAdrienne+Baxter+Bell 9. I understand from the previous owner who had bought the painting at the 1987 auction that Mr. Michel Quick, the author of George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonne, examined the painting 15 years ago and that he thought that the painting was not by Inness. He suggested that it was a version of the Farmhouse now in collection of the University of Nebraska. (The painting can be accessed at:https://odysseythroughnebraska.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/sheldon-farmhouse.jpg) He furhter suggested that The Farmhouse was reproduced in 1913 and perhaps an admirer of Innes must have seen it and made his version of that painting. My two cents: Recent digitally scanned documents, that I listed above, revealed that the painting I am selling was with the Henry Reinhardt and Son Galleries before the Farmhouse was reproduced in 1913. Thus, it seems highly unlikely that it is a copy of the Farmhouse. My painting is also softer and more atmospheric in manner than the Farmhouse. I would guess that Inness made it soon after the Farmhouse perhaps just before his death in 1894. The plethora of brushstrokes and the paint color types catalogued by Prof. Bell in her book are evident in the painting. My restorer, who restored many an Inness painting, did not detect anything unusual/out of ordinary with this painting. The technique of glazing and suspending the pigment in the glaze was evident in the painting. Anyway, given that the painting is not included in Mr. Quick’s catalogue of Inness’ work, I am curious to see what the ebay market thinks this painting is worth. Please feel free to ask questions. Please feel free to come by and inspect the painting or send your art conservator to do it for you.
