Josse-Lambert (Hubert) Bellis (Brussels, 6 January 1831 – Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, 16 April 1902) was a Belgian art and decorative painter from the 19th century who mainly painted flowers and still lifes. He was born as the son of Jean Lambert Bellis and Jeanne Marie Possé (or Gossé) and married Ernstine Josephine Haentjens. Bellis studied with François-Joseph Navez from 1846 to 1857 at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels; he was also a pupil of Henri De Coene. Bellis was in the first place decoration painter. Together with his brother Charles-Louis Bellis, he founded a business at the Brandhoutkaai 31 in Brussels in 1857. The following year, a private school for painters arrived at the first floor of the decoration store called “L'Effort”. The day after the carnival Guillaume Vogels, who later gained fame as an art painter, came to work in 1857 as a decorator. He became a student at their painting school, just like Jean Degreef. Bellis traveled a lot at home and abroad in the context of assignments that his studio carried out. In 1883 he undertook a leisure and study trip to Amsterdam in the company of James Ensor and Guillaume Vogels. After 1875 he became known for his realistic still lifes and some portraits. His still lifes show flowers, fruits and many shellfish. His earliest realizations were conventional. As his career progressed, he broke away from the overloaded contrived compositions and painted still-life paintings that gave him a wider reputation: roses, geraniums or chrysanthemums in dirty brown earthenware pots, roses, grapes, oysters and shrimps straight out of the sea on simple dishes, or the waste of a carnival party.
