Born near Epworth and raised in Tarboro, Pittman began his formal artistic training at the Rouse Art School before continuing his studies at Pennsylvania State University and the Carnegie Institute. Pittman exhibited widely throughout his career at major institutions including the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
