Medvey”) already in Russia, where he arrived in 1850, and where he remained until his death. August von Medvey was born in 1812 in Koszelow, Galicia (West Ukraine). After finishing his law studies at the University of Lemberg (now Lvov) Medvey attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts as student of Leopold Kupelwieser in 1834-1836. In 1840 the artist was active in Budapest, then returned to Lemberg, where he led an intensive artistic life. His oeuvre is evidently influenced by the famous miniaturist Moritz Michael Daffinger. In 1848 Medvey spent a short time in Paris and in 1850 followed an invitation to Russia. He stayed in Odessa until 1852, then went to Moscow and later to St. Petersburg, where he became royal painter in 1858. In 1862 the artist moved to Kharkov (Ukraine), where he lived until his death in 1870. Medvey’s works can be seen in various Russian museum collections.
