It was stretched and framed. We commissioned two paintings for our art gallery in 2005. Vain Courtship was commissioned by Thomas Agnew & Sons. The scence was set in the corner of a second storey Classical portico of artist's home in St. John's Wood, and its subject the forlorn sense of distant unrequited love. Alma-Tadema was a Dutch painter, he moved to England in 1870, he had a successful career and was lavished with personal and professional honors in his life time. His Neo-classical Ancient Roman, Greek and portrayals of Egyptian life were highly popular with Victorian society. They also showed the artist's knowledge of archaeology and social history. On several occasions, Alma-Tadema was commissioned for theater designs in Sir Henry Irving's 1901 production of Coriolanus at the Lycum Theatre in London. Anne Marie Gilbert-Jespersen (Danish) – Indonesian Girl circa 1883

Offered here is a very unique original painting by Danish artist Anne Marie Jespersen, circa 1883. Painting is oil on canvas and does not appear to be signed. It does appear to be dated lower middle ’83’. Painting measures ~19 x 15 inches and the overall framed size is ~25 X 20 inches. Although unsigned, an image search identified a nearly identical work, which was signed by Jespersen. After some study, I feel certain this painting was indeed executed by Jespersen. This work would have been done during the five year period that she lived in Indonesia with her physician husband. The painting was lined and restored in recent years, and is in very good condition. —————————————— Anne Marie Gilbert-Jespersen (1849-1925).
