In 1956, Bruning joined the Foreign Language Department at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, where he taught until his retirement in 1990. Alongside his academic career, he actively pursued his passion for art. Having grown up on the Dutch coast of the North Sea, Bruning was captivated by the subtle nuances of color, shape, and the emotional impact of land, sky, and water intersections. He often painted coastal locations such as the Cote d'Azur, the Caribbean, the Greek isles, and Cape Cod, seeking to depict these landscapes and cityscapes from unique, unexpected perspectives.
