19thC Landscape Oil Painting in the Barbizon Style by E. Marin
This landscape oil on board painting is by E. Marin, a French painter of landscapes with figures, who was active in the mid 19th century. This work has all the earmarks of followers of the Barbizon School. It features a depiction of a small cottage by a pond with a figure in the foreground. The composition features the tonal contrast between the trees plus the cottage and the large, fluid sky. The painting measures 8” by 6” to sight and 15” by 13” in t frame. The paint surface is in a stable, very good condition. The gilded, deep cove period frame shows some abrasions on the corners. Some of the gold leaf shows wear evidenced by the reddish boule exposed on the inner liners. This is consistent with age and exposure over the years. The artist signed the painting on the lower right hand corner.
