Grand Gorge of the Colorado and Little Colorado Rivers by Philipp Merillat
This monumental plein air landscape oil painting was painted on location at the Desert View overlook on the South Rim of Grand Canyon in Arizona. The size is the canvas before framing of 162″ x 52″. The painting was transported on the side of my motor home, first from the canyon where it was painted to New Mexico, where it was framed, then to Colorado where it was on display for several years in Pagosa Springs. It is now in my studio in Silver City, New Mexico. At the time of execution the painting was my largest; it is now my second largest painting, both of the Grand Canyon and both painted on location. I am working on a project with framing some other paintings and this one could be framed in a way similar to the others. The framing is a unique idea you’ve probably never seen anywhere before, so if you make a visit to the studio, I can show you my example for that with one of the completed framing projects.
